I would need an external HDD enclosure ($250). $2200 for the medium-end with a 256GB SSD. I know a pimped out iMac 27" will work great for me.

Sounds like we use our Macs for nearly the same thing when it comes to "serving", and that's basically just using it as a pimped out media server and a media storage monster that is also used for video and photo editing/creation. I think you probably nailed my definition of "server" which isn't the "real" definition of server.

Is it stupid to spend $800 on a Mac Pro 5,1 in 2016? Is this a quantum leap over my Mac Pro, or something that's just a little faster.or am I better off looking for a NEW Mac of some other sort? I would spend about $800 for one of these. So, I'm thinking about a Mac Pro 5,1 with a six core 3.33GHz.

However, Apple hasn't touched them since 2013, and the price is a bit ridiculous being the age of them. The new Mac Pro I will need to buy external enclosures for, but I think for that model the effort would be worth it.

I certainly don't want to buy an iMac and have to tear it apart just to install a SSD. The iMacs usually require doing a BTO option in order to get the SSD drive. I would really like to just get another Mac Pro. Since this computer acts as a server, I REALLY don't want a Mac which I have to buy a bunch of external closures for and make the Mac appear like it's on life support.

I'm thinking it's time to potentially look for a new Mac, then sell this one off on Craigslist. Not a big deal because it only takes 18 seconds to reboot, but I think something is a little wonky either with the OS (I haven't had a clean install in 4-6 years) or possibly the hardware, but don't know if I want to sink in time to test. Pretty amazing for a 2008 computer that's damn near 8 YEARS OLD!Īnyhow, it seems like every other day the machine will freeze and I need to hold down the power button to restart it. But I can tell it's starting to get long in the tooth for some things (like the new iPhoto) but still acceptable. The performance is "GOOD" for the most part. I also have the 24" Apple Cinema Display. 8GB of Ram, SSD, 5770 (I think), and 5TB of internal storage since it acts as my media storage.
